Developing a Killer Personal Brand

This post was first featured on Hipurbangirl.com

I recently started a new job, and on the first day my boss told me that what separated me from all the other interview candidates and ultimately won me the position was my online brand.

Whether you’re on the job-hunt, launching your own business or looking to establish yourself online, it’s important to invest some time and thought into the business of you. By effectively developing and marketing your online reputation you’ll be in a better position to target your personal and professional goals.

Get Recognized and Be Consistent
Determining who you are and what you do is the first step in creating your personal brand and an online marketing strategy for yourself. Think about your strengths, skills, experience and interests, and ask yourself what you can bring to the table that will set you apart from the competition. Do you have a knack for graphic design, or are you a makeup artist experienced in bridal looks? When you know your strengths and passions you can highlight them by creating a personal brand that’s consistent with your objectives. Whether your audience is hiring managers, peers or potential clients they should be able to get an understanding of who you are, where you’ve been and what you can offer when they connect with you.

Dream Job

Decide your core message and start building your profiles. It’s a good idea to use the same username across all platforms so you’ll be easy to find on every network. Using a site like Namecheck you can search to see if your name or chosen brand name is available across all major social networks and then claim them for your use. About.me is a great tool to build yourself a splash page that will lead your audience to all of your social pages and websites from one place.

Google yourself and take note of what already exists about you online. Take the time to go through the privacy settings on your Facebook account and remove anything you wouldn’t want a potential boss to see. You’ll also need a headshot of yourself to use across all your channels. Make sure it’s simple, professional and easily recognizable so your peers can pin point you when you’re networking in real life!

Know Your Niche
Trying to be something or someone you’re not online won’t benefit you in the real world. Thus, it’s in your best interest to be honest and realistic with what you know and what you like rather than faking it in an attempt to win influence and recognition. Select your area of focus based on the industry you work in, your skills and experience and what you are passionate about. This will let your true self shine through online and get you connected with others who have similar interests.

Dream Job

Share Who You Are
How will you communicate your personal brand to potential clients, peers and hiring managers? Knowing the right social platforms to use to get yourself heard will ensure you’ll stand out from the crowd. A photographer might want to promote themselves online with a digital portfolio or Flickr account, while a stylist might want to share outfit posts on a blog and connect with other fashion enthusiasts via Twitter. Make sure you are present in the channels that will connect you with your target audience. This is your opportunity to leave a memorable first impression and leave your audience curious to learn more about you.

Life Quotes

It may not happen over night, but thinking through your personal and professional goals and aspirations to put together your personal brand and marketing strategy will lead you on the path to a future of endless possibilities.

Tell me: How have you used your online brand for career success?

You’re the Machine at FitWall

On a Wednesday night in a fitness studio located in a strip mall in Vaughan, I was hanging onto a steel rung above my head for dear life. House music was blaring from the speakers, the instructor was enthusiastically yelling at us to push harder and my forearms were burning.

FitWall Studio Vaughan

This was my first experience at Canada’s flagship FitWall studio- a fitness concept where strength-training exercises are done on a vertical steel apparatus while your arms and feet hold you up on the eight rungs. Classes are only 30 minutes, but boy do they get you feeling the burn. You can hear more about my experience in my Activity-A-Week post on Hip + Urban Girl’s Guide before you go get those biceps pumping for yourself.

Feeling the Burn at the Barre: BarreWorks Toronto

I’ve been going to the bar a lot lately. I have more energy, I feel stronger and leaner and I think I’ve even lost a few pounds!

I should mention this isn’t your typical bar – in fact it’s a barre not a bar. BarreWorks Toronto to be exact. It’s the newest ballet-inspired fitness studio on Queen West, and I tried their 60-minute Mixed Level class for the Hip & Urban Girl’s Activity a Week column along with Lisa, HUG’s EiC. Try it out for yourself and you’ll feel a burn similar to the one experienced after one too many shots of tequila – except at this barre the burning sensation will make its way to your thighs and linger for days.

Beauty Rave: The Clarisonic Mia2

I know we are only midway into February, but I’m confident that the Clarisonic Mia2 is my best beauty investment of the year. Let me explain. For the last few months I’d been hearing rave reviews about the Clarisonic Skin Cleansing System from some of my favourite beauty bloggers and magazines. Made from the same people who brought us the Sonicare Toothbrush, this thing is basically deemed to be a giant electric toothbrush to remove dirt and makeup from your face. I finally became a proud Clarisonic owner on my last trip to the United States (The Mia2 that I purchased is not yet available in Canada, but the other models are) and haven’t looked back. You can read more about how it works and what I think about it here.

All-Natural and All-Canadian: Consonant Skincare

Beauty brand Consonant Skincare recently opened its flagship store in Toronto. It’s 100% Canadian and 100% natural soaps, moisturizers and lotions. I stopped by the shop on behalf of Hipurbangirls.com to learn more about the brand created by Bill Baker, and try some organic skincare products for the first time. Verdict: Works just as well as the mainstream chemical-laden products you’re used to, minus all the irritating and potentially dangerous properties. And the packaging is super cute (huge bonus). Find out more about the store and the brand here.

‘Tis Better to Give Than to Receive

I’m having a hard time thinking about what I want for Christmas. I’ve spend the past few weeks reading dozens of holiday press releases and compiling gift guides about the newest and greatest gifts to give this season, but I still can’t think of anything that I’m dying to get on December 25.

Call it gift overload if you will, but its probably because the things I want can’t be purchased at Yorkdale and wrapped up in a red and green papered box. I’d like to have some time to relax, read some books, watch some movies, eat some good food and just hang out with some of my favourite people in a place where the temperature will be in the double digits. And that’s exactly what I’m going to be getting this year and that’s good enough for me.

Here's to Christmas at the beach. Better than any other gift.

But still you’ll want to buy something for those special people in your life, and you might want them to buy you something too. I’ve found some lovely things to get and give which are featured here in Whatever Magazine, and small indulgences to add to the stockings on Christmas morning here on Hipurbangirls.com and here on styleninetofive.com

And if you really insist you have to get me something, then I guess I take an iPad 2 please and thank you. What? I can use it to read, watch movies, and look up recipes to make meals while I’m on my family vacation!

Presents and Cocktails

What’s a Christmas party without perfectly wrapped presents under the tree, and what’s the fun in opening said gifts if not accompanied by a festive cocktail? These are the injustices that will haunt us throughout the holidays….

But anyways, you’re probably running out of unique ways to wrap presents for your family, friends and co-workers, and they’re probably sick of collecting those gift bags from the dollar store. Solution: follow some advice from gift-wrapper extraordinaire Corinna vanGerwen for gifts that will look almost too good to be opened.

And to make sure no one goes thirsty as they unwrap their beautiful packages, be sure to keep the ingredients ready to make these festive holiday beverages which, perfectly enough, are just as pretty looking as those gifts you’ll have. Aren’t you just the perfect hostess. Happy Holidays!
