This semester in J-school we have been divided into our media specialization classes. I’ve chosen to do my specialization in print, so as part of the course we will be building on our writing and reporting skills by working on an online weekly paper called, you guessed it, The Online Reporter.
Along with writing, we are responsible for the editing and production of the web-based paper. Every week we will be assigned a role as a reporter or a producer. As a reporter we write local stories as well as take and edit photos to go with the article. The production crew works on story editing as well as posting the new content on the website each Wednesday.
In this first week I was assigned the role of a reporter. I decided to cover a story about a program offered to Western undergraduate students called Alternative Spring Break, which organizes volunteer projects in other countries for students to participate in. I interviewed Nicole Leite, a student who will be going to work at an orphanage in the Dominican Republic with the program over reading week, as well as the co-ordinator of the program, Stephanie Hayne.
