My weekend at Teen Vogue Fashion University has come and gone but the memories will last forever.
One of the most exciting parts of the day was hearing from the keynote speaker- the one, the only Diane von Furstenberg. As DvF took the stage the cameras started flashing and she told all us over-eager Fashion Uers to put them away and listen. I’m sure we would have listened anyways as she has so much inspiration to share. Here are some of my favorite parts of her speech:
1. The DvF Motto: “Feel like a woman, wear a dress”
Diane takes pride in understanding women. Her iconic wrap dress from the 70s was so popular because her designs flattered the female body, and were made of comfortable printed jersey. She also believes clothes are like close reliable friends: “When you’re standing in front of the closet in the morning, and you feel like shit, you should go for the reliable one that makes you feel good.” There is definitely something about a great piece that lifts your mood no matter how early in the morning.
2. Snap Happy
Diane always has a camera with her. She loves to snap pictures of anything she finds beautiful or interesting while she is traveling, and many of her pictures act as inspiration for patterns or themes in collections. Diane also photographed the entire campaign for her new line of sunglasses and the model just so happened to be her son’s fianceé.
3. Street Style
DvF says she loves seeing a variety of women wearing her clothes because they take her runway pieces and create such unique street looks. Whether its a woman pairing a wrap dress with combat boots and piercings or another donning stilettos and pearls, its great inspiration for her. She decided to relaunch her iconic wrap dress in the 1990s after noticing young, hip women wearing her dresses from the 70s from their mothers or from vintage shops.
4. Girl Power
Right now DvF says her mission is to inspire and motivate the women of the world. She is a devoted philanthropist with Vital Voices and is the President of the Council of Fashion Designers of America were she mentors young designers.
5. Words to Live By
My favorite inspirational quotes from DvF. They have found a home on my bulletin board.
- “Within every one of us there is a wonder woman.”
- “Trust yourself, believe in yourself, and do what you want to do.”
- “I always knew I wanted to become a very independent woman and I did that through fashion.
And my personal favorite:
- “Always remember you may be looking at the woman across the room, thinking she is so put together and confident, but for that woman you might be the put together and confident woman across the room.”
